How to Introduce Ragas to Your Baby

You do not need to be a trained musician to share the gift of Indian classical music with your baby. Here is how to begin:

Start with instrumental recordings. Sitar, veena, flute (bansuri), and sarod recordings are excellent starting points. Instrumental music allows the baby to focus on the melodic and rhythmic elements without the complexity of lyrics.

The Difference Between Ragas and Children's Music

It is worth distinguishing between Indian classical music and the children's music that dominates YouTube and apps. The animated nursery rhyme videos that many Indian babies are exposed to feature fast-changing visuals, synthetic sounds, and rapid tempo shifts — exactly the opposite of what the developing brain benefits from.

The research on screen time shows that rapid audiovisual stimulation overstimulates the infant nervous system. Indian classical music, by contrast, unfolds slowly, builds gradually, and provides the kind of unhurried auditory experience that developing neural circuits are optimized to process.

This does not mean nursery rhymes are bad — singing them live to your baby is wonderful. But the screen-based, hyper-stimulating versions of children's music serve a very different neurological purpose than the contemplative, complex beauty of raga-based music.
